5 tips to inspect a used tractor before buying

1. Inspect the overall tractor condition

Although a tractor's appearance may indicate that it is well maintained, it might also reveal some hidden issues. For example, if the paint is cracked or peeling, it may suggest that the vehicle has been exposed to the elements for a long time. Similarly, if the plastic on the tractor is brittle, it may suggest that the vehicle has been in contact with the outside environment for an extended period.

Many sellers will give a quick fix to a tractor by painting its parts. This method usually involves using spray paint on the engine. Furthermore, this method gives the illusion that the entire structure is clean. However, it can also conceal rust and other structural issues. Before buying a used tractor, it's important to thoroughly inspect it to avoid disappointments. Remember, it's a working machine, so expect signs of wear and tear.

Tip: Take a look around the tractor and see if there are any signs of neglect or damage. If it’s in rough shape, it could be due to an accident or because it’s not mechanically sound. However, if the sheet metal is in good condition and the missing paint is not noticeable, repainting is not a problem.

2. Engine compartment

Check if the engine starts easily. Also, make sure that the oil and dirt marks on the major and cylinder head casings are the original ones. If they vary, it means that the cylinder head packing has been replaced.

Although a new pack might not indicate that there are any big problems with the engine, it is important to ask the seller why the head was taken out. Some people might reuse the old packing after the heads have been removed. Also, make sure that the sides of the pack are still stained and old.

Tip: When it’s time to start the tractor, lift the hood and let it run. Like any piece of equipment, it’s important to start the tractor. After lifting the hood, inspect the wires, cables, and pipes for any issues.

Some people will move the machine to a more accessible area so that it can be cleaned. They will also remove any oil stains from the floor. Before starting it, make sure that the engine is cold.

3. Hydraulic power

When inspecting hydraulics, look for signs of poor seals and leaks, which could indicate that damage to the components is already present. Before you start running any attachments, make sure that the parts you will be using have the proper specification.

For instance, if you have a mechanical drive, make sure that the PTO (Power Take-Off) shaft has the proper specification. This ensures that the attachments you will be using have the proper specification.

Poor seals and leaks can be signs that damage to the hydraulic tank or outlet may be present. Before you start running any attachments, make sure that the parts you will be using have the proper specification.

Tip: Check the hydraulic system by attaching a heavy implement to the tractor. Make sure that everything is in its position before closing the engine. If the implementation starts to drop, this could be an indication that the system is not working properly. The hydraulic system should be used to lift and lower the implement.

4. Articulation point

The articulation point of a tractor is the most critical part of the vehicle. To check this, perform a visual inspection. Make sure that the point has been greased properly. If you see metal shards, this could be the result of improper maintenance.

Besides conducting a visual inspection, you should also perform an operational inspection. This step involves starting the tractor and moving it backwards and forwards. While driving, inspect for a knock. It could be a sign that the transmission slip is defective.

Tip: After moving the tractor, turn it around and feel for any looseness or movement in the steering wheel. If you feel that the primary pin of the vehicle is bent or damaged, it could be the result of improper maintenance. If the steering is hard or tight, it could mean that the hydraulic cylinders are not working properly.

5. Check the exhaust

After a couple of minutes, crank the tractor up. Make sure that the transmission is out of gear, lock the brakes, and start it. Check the smoke's appearance, it can tell you something about the engine's condition.

Tip: The colour of the smoke can indicate engine problems. Here’s what it means:

  • If the smoke is clear, everything is in order. Since there's no smoke coming from the exhaust, there's no reason to suspect anything.
  • When the smoke is white, it's possible that something is wrong with the fuel system's head gasket or water.
  • The tractor might be burning oil if the smoke is blue. This could be a costly issue, or it could be an internal issue.
  • If the smoke is black, it could be a fuel or air-related issue. It can be a simple fix, and it usually involves replacing the air filter.
